Chapter 20

Nicki trotted down the corridor to Alexei’s office. On the way back to their suite following dinner Caleb had shown her which office was Antonov’s. He’d chuckled relaying all the information he’d gathered while making three separate trips to the men’s room ostensibly to take another hit of cocaine. He said he made a point of leaving enough white powder on the counter to cement his alibi. In his reconnoiters, Caleb was able to identify who warranted a private office, confirming the hierarchy of the organization. Sahin had an office next to Antonov. Vadim, Gleb and Ilya all had offices nearby. Walking ‘by mistake’ into the large technology room befitting scores of world class hackers, Caleb counted no fewer than forty techs hard at work on high end computers. The majority were Thai to be sure, but at least a quarter were Slavic.

Nodding to the armed guards at the complex entrance, Nicki sauntered down the corridor as if she’d been invited. Her casual confidence worked, because both men bowed slightly and let her pass without questioning her. Nicki had a ready cover story if anyone tried to stop her. She intended to tell them that Mr. Antonov had invited her. After the interest he’d expressed in her last night, Nicki felt certain he would support her outrageous lie. He seemed particularly taken with her brazenly flippant responses. And damn, what could be bolder than inviting herself to his private office?

She knocked on the door and waited. After a moment she tried the door and found it unlocked. Sucking in a deep breath, she made a quick decision. Let’s face it, this was too sweet an opportunity to pass up. She’d been looking for an excuse to check out Alexei’s office. The unlocked door seemed like a sign from the universe. Knowing she should check with Caleb, she decided it was too late. Besides, if she was going to bring him into the equation, she should have done it before she left this morning. It was too late now. She’d explain to Caleb when she got back. ‘Always easier to apologize after than ask permission before.’ She already gone black on her com so that she would have the excuse of not hearing him if he did try to contact her in the next few minutes. Heck by the time he discovered she’d left, she’d be back at their suite.

Shoving aside her unease Nicki walked into the empty office and locked the door behind her. To her surprise, the office was stark, almost bare. A large metal desk, a couple of chairs and a bookcase holding hundreds of DVD’s were the only furnishings. Given Alexei’s penchant for expensive clothes and entertainment it was hardly the opulent chamber she’d expected. No photos or other personal articles hinted at the man who occupied it. Disappointed but nevertheless intrigued by the utilitarian interior, she made a beeline for his desk. Ignoring the niggling fingers of danger prickling the back of her neck, she booted up the computer.
